My world in polarity

I spent a huge part of my life with books. I learned to read and write at the age of three. I was fascinated by seeing the colors that come with the books. I enjoyed understanding the words printed on the pages. That was why I realized that my ultimate goal in life is to have one of my own.

Years of education exposed me to writing different genres. I was consistently part of school publications. I was even privileged to become an editor-in-chief of my high school newspaper. So when it was my time to choose a course for college, I knew that it has to be related to writing.

My family encouraged me to take Accountancy. They said that opportunities for a Certified Public Accountant are boundless. Well, I kinda liked it money-wise and I am interested in business as well. At the same time, I cannot give up my visions in writing. Luckily, De La Salle University offered me a double degree scholarship, so I ended up studying both courses of polarity. When people ask me why, I tell them that I want to fulfill both passion and practicality. Tough life, but it’s the life we choose.

I majored in Literature in my first three years of college, and it was the best years of my life. It was the first time that I went to school not because it was required, but I genuinely wanted to learn. It was like traveling through time because we read the canon from classics to modern literature. During those times I was also enlightened by my purpose as a writer— to write not only for myself but for society. I found fulfillment in being a social realist. I firmly believe that creative resistance is one of the most effective ways of criticizing, non-violent, but feeds and moves the mind.

It was hard for me to shift in the world of numbers, where I am at as of the moment. Accountancy requires objectivity and analysis, yet sometimes my brain just mindlessly flows. However, I am certain that I want to finish it anyway. It is completely different from my orientation and that challenges my capabilities. Fortunately, Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants, an organization of BSA students in DLSU, has Double Rule Magazine as their own publication, which is I am handling currently. I still have an avenue to revisit what I learned in my first degree.

I would never regret taking a double degree course for it allows me to see life from different perspectives. Accountancy brings me close to the reality of life, that one must be practical in order to provide for both wants and necessities. On the other hand, Literature revives the dreamer in me. It is my breather and escapes from all the hustles. I love both of my courses. I find them equally essential since life is just a cycle of labor and leisure.

To have my own book, which is my goal, is my life itself after all. Our birth is the first page of a blank book called life. Living is a chance to fill it with dreams and stories and it is our call to make it interesting. Our books enable us to build our own worlds, of whichever kind, types, and genres. We are capable of anything. We are the limit that sets its pages.
